Traditional middle-status, middle-skilled jobs are being relentlessly destroyed by technology. For the rest of the 21st century, at the top there will be high demand for high-skill, high-reward jobs; meanwhile at the bottom, an army of workers will be needed to perform personal service jobs, for instance in the huge health and hospitality industries. It is our choice, or rather that of school-leavers, whether the latter jobs get done by themselves or by immigrant labour. A substantial proportion of Britain’s less skilled young people can either accept jobs as nurses, waiters, chambermaids, drivers, kitchen hands; or they can let foreigners have them, and doom themselves to long-term unemployment.
