Yet, at the end of the week about a third of the food in our fridges goes into the bin. This is quite shocking, but we're used to indulging ourselves with cheap, processed food that is often totally lacking in nutrients. In the Fifties about 25 per cent of disposable income was spent on food and drink, today in Europe it's 10 per cent, while in the developing world it's 50 per cent or more. Even worse, our demand for this cheap food is not only contributing to an energy and water crisis globally, but it is making us sick and depressed. So, we "treat" ourselves to processed, tasty food and wonder why obesity levels are increasing, ditto heart disease, cancers, mental illness and a whole range of other ailments related to the processed food we put into our bodies.
